Headland House
Set on a Waiheke headland amongst mature pohutukawa, the design of this house needed to be sympathetic to the form of the ridgeline it occupies and create a sense of being fitted amongst the trees.
The elevated site offers extensive views over the Hauraki Gulf and open ocean beyond. The linear overhanging rooves extend over the internal and exterior decks and retractable glazing blurs the connection between these spaces.
Blackened timber cladding protects the more enclosed sleeping spaces as the building form is carefully established between the limbs and canopies of the protected Pohutukawa trees.
Project Details: The internal floor area is approximately 240m2 and construction was completed in mid-2005. Fearon Hay’s project team was led by Sam Atcheson. Tim Hay and Jeff Fearon are the design architects. Photography is by Patrick Reynolds.
