Lake Wakatipu House
The design for a residence on the shores of Lake Wakatipu takes reference from the wider landscape characterised by expanses of tussock interspersed with weathered schist outcrops.
The home is configured as a series of terraces laid along the terrain. Weathered concrete masses are interspersed with stone walled gardens and glazed volumes.
The living spaces are perched over the falling contour, providing outlook and views over the lake and mountains from the stone ledges.
The gardens are to establish and mature around and between the forms of the house, creating a sense of the building merged into the alpine landscape over time.
Project Details: The overall floor area is approximately 1000m2 and construction was completed at the beginning of 2005. Fearon Hay’s project team was led by Gordon Gallagher. Tim Hay and Jeff Fearon are the design architects. Photography is by Patrick Reynolds.
