Moke Lake
Set amongst established trees above Lake Wakatipu, Moke Valley Cabin is conceived as a quiet retreat within the alpine landscape. Positioned on a steeply falling site, the cabin responds to the existing terrain with a lightness of form, preserving the natural contours and vegetation while opening to expansive views across the lake.
A slender steel structure anchors the building to the escarpment, allowing it to extend beyond the slope with minimal contact to the ground. The elevated form sits lightly amongst the trees, its presence defined as much by what is left undisturbed as by the architecture itself.
he material palette is restrained. Dark-stained cedar allows the exterior to settle into the surrounding vegetation, while expansive glazing draws the landscape into the interior. Sliding panels open the living spaces to the elements, softening the boundary between inside and out and allowing the cabin to shift with the changing conditions of its setting.
Internally, a compact plan is organised around a central service core. Living and sleeping spaces are arranged to capture the changing qualities of light and the outlook beyond. Natural timber, stone and metal establish a quiet material continuity, creating an interior that is warm, tactile and deliberately understated.
The existing landscape remains central to the project, with established trees retained and native planting introduced to complement the site's natural character. The architecture is conceived as a measured intervention within this setting grounded in its materiality, precise in its construction and quietly immersed in the landscape.
